Cela-Conde and Altaba (2002) establsihed the subfamily Praeanthropinae under the family Hominidae to group several species within the single type genus Praeanthropus. The type species of this genus is Praeanthropus africanus Weinert, 1950, now Praeanthropus afarensis following the supression of 'africanus' in favor of 'afarensis' by the ICZN (see entry for Australopithecus afarensis).
The name is also used in Cela-Conde (2003) but there misspelled as "Preanthropinae" in Table 1.
